In the first example, the white background is there for 1 of 2 reasons. 1) You did not trim the white in an image editor like photoshop 2) You saved the image in a format that does not support transparency like jpg. Always use one of the following for transparent portions in an image (psd, tiff, png, or pdf) {tga could be used as well, but it is getting outdated}
