An excess of Cross-Reference Formats usually has one of a few causes:
- Hack: They are being used as a work-around for Frame's lack of a Definition: [<$markertext>] format type, where each Marker is unique to the target text. Once the apparently low maximum capacity of the Cross-Reference Format Catalog is reached, the solutions for this include using Run-In para formats so that Definition: [<$paratext>] works as desired, or waiting for FM 17.0.3e (maybe).
- Confusion: The author(s) didn't understand how to craft generalized Xref formats, and grew the catalog needlessly. Some clean-up is indicated.
- Pollution: The enterprise had no documented conventions for Xref formats, and Defs under different Names, large groups of which do the same thing, have been accumulating over the years, usually under multiple authors. Some clean-up is indicated.
