Unlike Windows, Mac does not offer a file move option. You would have to perform a copy from your internal HD and then a paste to the external HD. The only way to later get rid of the files you copied that are still on your internal HD is to select them all and then move them to the trash. Once you have done that however, the files will still be on your internal HD since they were only put in your trash can rather than actually deleted. To complete the operation, I recommend that you start Lightroom and verify, for your own peace of mind, that Lightroom comes up and displays all of your photos from the external HD correctly. If so, you can then empty your trash to complete the delete. Once this has all been done, you will reclaim internal HD space. If not, the files can be recovered from the trash. Once they have been removed from the trash however, they are pretty much gone for good.
