Are you able to select the text in Word if you triple-click it? If not, is it possible that the original PDF was created from a scanned document? If so, the text could be image text, rather than selectable/editable text. ExportPDF converts image text to selectable text by default, but that option can be disabled if you convert the file via Reader. So, I would make sure that you are allowing ExportPDF to perform OCR, and make sure the the correct language is selected for Text Recognition.
